All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam
From 37 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 to none in 2024, and 47 Assembly seats in 2026: the succession problem, a corruption judgment and changing alliances.
Identity & faction boundaries
AIADMK is not an INDIA founding participant. Its history is included because its regional opposition role and leadership struggles matter independently of that bloc. The Supreme Court’s assets judgment concerns named defendants, not the legal guilt of the party as a whole. [opp-b-aiadmk-judgment]
Scope: 2004 through the 11 October 2026 source check. Selected electoral, institutional and leadership records; not a complete catalogue of every allegation. Current case outcomes are stated only where an inspected record supports them.
Affiliations, with their dates
These are dated records, not a claim that every arrangement remains unchanged at publication.
Contested outside the BJP-led NDA in 2024; national results are kept separate from the later alliance. [opp-eci-2024][opp-b-aiadmk-nda]
AIADMK and BJP announced their renewed alliance under Palaniswami for the 2026 state election. [opp-b-aiadmk-nda]
The 2025 alliance and 2026 contest are historical records; no newly authenticated October coalition agreement is asserted. [opp-b-aiadmk-nda][opp-b-aiadmk-candidates]
The election record
Five completed Lok Sabha cycles, followed by selected Assembly results. A predecessor is a separate party series. “Unknown” means this review could not establish the total; it does not mean zero.

Turning points
- Election
A parliamentary high of 37 seats
AIADMK won 37 seats, a major gain over nine in 2009. This was its own tally, not a national alliance victory. [opp-eci-2014][opp-eci-2009]
- Oversight
Assets convictions restored for three co-accused
The Supreme Court restored Sasikala, Sudhakaran and Ilavarasi’s convictions. Appeals concerning Jayalalithaa abated after her death; the distinction cannot be replaced by a blanket claim that every contemporary leader was convicted. [opp-b-aiadmk-judgment]
- Election
State representation falls to 66
The original legislature profile records 66 AIADMK seats against a DMK majority. The completed 2021 result is kept separate from the profile’s partial 2016 comparator and from the later 2026 tally. [opp-b-tn-assembly2021]
- Election
No Lok Sabha seats
The party fell from one Lok Sabha seat in 2019 to none in 2024. A vote share or voter motive cannot be read directly from the zero-seat outcome. [opp-eci-2019][opp-eci-2024]
- Alliance
Renewed BJP alliance
The joint alliance announcement positioned Palaniswami as the state alliance leader. This post-dates the 2024 contest. [opp-b-aiadmk-nda]
- Election
47 seats in a changed state contest
ECI’s 2026 summary records 47 ADMK seats, behind TVK and DMK. The party’s official candidate-list publication is a nomination record, not an outcome guarantee. [opp-b-tn2026][opp-b-aiadmk-candidates]
The assets case: conviction, abatement and individual responsibility
Institutional finding: the 2017 judgment restored the three surviving co-accused’s trial convictions and rejected the High Court acquittal as to them. It explains their relationship with Jayalalithaa and the companies/assets examined. Jayalalithaa’s appeals abated because she had died. Neither outcome is a conviction of Palaniswami, nor proof that each AIADMK supporter is complicit. [opp-b-aiadmk-judgment]
Personal authority and succession
Analysis: a party organised around a dominant leader faces a test when personal authority disappears: who can challenge the successor, how are nominations decided, and how are rival factions heard? The assets judgment documents an associate network; the 2026 candidate list documents formal nominations. Neither provides a complete audit of internal democracy. Hereditary succession and loyalty to associates should not be conflated. [opp-b-aiadmk-judgment][opp-b-aiadmk-candidates]
Alliance choices and claims of appeasement
The renewed BJP partnership is an inspectable political decision. It does not establish what all AIADMK voters believe about Hinduism or minorities. This release has not authenticated a party-wide anti-Hindu statement or a discriminatory programme from the selected records; allegation-specific original speeches, policy texts and responses would be needed before publishing that claim. [opp-b-aiadmk-nda]
What the nomination record does not show
The party presents candidates and a route back to office, but nomination documents do not measure school quality, jobs, hospital access or contract integrity. Analysis: a serious evaluation needs comparable administrative outcomes for AIADMK’s terms and its successors, rather than assuming that a parliamentary loss proves failure of every state service. That comprehensive comparison remains outside the inspected set. [opp-b-aiadmk-candidates]
A swing in representation is not an explanation by itself
Analysis: the contrast between 37 seats in 2014 and zero in 2024 is substantial. Changed alliances, rival regional parties and leadership cohesion warrant testing, alongside constituency-level vote changes. The 2026 tally shows continuing representation, but does not establish that the renewed alliance achieved its stated objective. No causal verdict on religious rhetoric or corruption follows from these totals alone. [opp-eci-2014][opp-eci-2024][opp-b-tn2026]
