Bharat Rashtra Samithi

From a successful Telangana statehood party to state and parliamentary setbacks: irrigation oversight, leadership concentration and a legal record that changed after 2024.

Identity & faction boundaries

The older Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) election label is preserved within the same organisational history; its later BRS name does not create a second party’s seats. The unofficial bharatrashtrasamithi.org site is excluded; the party’s brsonline.in archive is used. [opp-eci-2014][opp-b-brs-site]

Scope: 2004 through the 11 October 2026 source check. Selected electoral, institutional and leadership records; not a complete catalogue of every allegation. Current case outcomes are stated only where an inspected record supports them.

Affiliations, with their dates

These are dated records, not a claim that every arrangement remains unchanged at publication.

  1. Contested as a separate regional party; not an INDIA founding participant. [opp-india-formation][opp-roster-report][opp-eci-2024]

  2. Attributed reporting: K.T. Rama Rao rejected an alliance with BJP. [opp-b-brs-bjp2026]

  3. No authenticated new national alliance agreement located; retain the dated leader statement without upgrading it into a membership register. [opp-b-brs-bjp2026][opp-b-brs-site]

Seats are outcomes, not explanations

The election record

Five completed Lok Sabha cycles, followed by selected Assembly results. A predecessor is a separate party series. “Unknown” means this review could not establish the total; it does not mean zero.

Turning points

  1. Election

    Eleven parliamentary seats

TRS increased its Lok Sabha representation to eleven. The name in this cycle is TRS; BRS is not retroactively substituted into ECI tables. [opp-eci-2014]

  2. Election

    Loss of the state-government mandate

BRS fell from 88 seats in 2018 to 39 in 2023; Congress won 64 of 119. The original legislature profile excludes subsequent defections and disqualification proceedings, which cannot be rewritten as votes cast in the election. [opp-b-ts-assembly2023]

  3. Oversight

    Kaleshwaram performance audit

CAG published a project-specific review covering planning, financing and execution through March 2022. Its audit findings are not automatically a criminal judgment against KCR or his family. [opp-b-kaleshwaram][opp-b-kaleshwaram-framework]

  4. Election

    No Lok Sabha seats

BRS won no parliamentary seats, after nine in the preceding cycle. A zero-seat outcome is not a zero-voter result. [opp-eci-2024][opp-eci-2019]

  5. Governance

    Party archive publishes Kaleshwaram response

The party archive labels Harish Rao’s presentation as a response to adverse accounts of Kaleshwaram. The complete Telugu slides have not been inspected, so this history does not invent a detailed translated rebuttal. [opp-b-brs-site]

  6. Oversight

Excise revision records a changed trial stage

The High Court’s recusal judgment records the February 2026 trial discharge and CBI revision. A procedural recusal decision is not a merits reversal; October disposition and the separate ED case remain inspection gaps. [opp-b-excise2026]

Irrigation audit and the changing excise-case stage

Institutional record: CAG’s Kaleshwaram report scrutinises project planning and financing. Full retrieval of the currently indexed PDF failed; detailed numerical loss claims and personal criminal responsibility are withheld. Party response: the June 2025 archive announces Harish Rao’s rebuttal, but its complete presentation is also uninspected. Both limits remain visible. [opp-b-kaleshwaram][opp-b-kaleshwaram-framework][opp-b-brs-site]

Legal record: the excise proceedings involving the wider accused group reached a trial discharge in February 2026, followed by CBI revision. The April High Court ruling rejected recusal applications; it did not reverse discharge. This edition does not present 2024 arrests or bail as the latest trial status, or certify the current disposition of separate ED allegations. [opp-b-excise2026]

Leadership concentration requires a procedure, not a surname test

The official archive centres KCR, K.T. Rama Rao and Harish Rao in organisation and policy messaging. Analysis: the test for preferential access is how decisions, candidate selection and leadership challenges work in practice. The archived prominence of individuals does not by itself establish corrupt appointment or prove that rank-and-file members lack a voice. [opp-b-brs-site]

No substitute for a specific, authenticated statement

The inspected party archive and oversight documents do not authenticate a party-wide attack on Hinduism. Analysis: public spending on religious institutions and targeted minority policies can be compared, but the policy, criteria, amount and legal basis must first be identified. Current alliance speculation is also insufficient evidence of religious motive. This theme remains a scoped gap rather than an adverse finding. [opp-b-brs-site]

A flagship project must answer its audit

Analysis: a flagship irrigation project should be evaluated through water delivered, usable assets, recurring energy costs and disclosed liabilities. A response presentation should engage the auditor’s actual questions. This release locates the audit and the party’s response announcement but does not claim to have completed an engineering audit or verified every answer. [opp-b-kaleshwaram][opp-b-kaleshwaram-framework][opp-b-brs-site]

Statehood success did not guarantee continuing support

Analysis: BRS’s electoral record exposes the difference between winning a durable state organisation and retaining votes after governing. The 2023 loss and 2024 parliamentary wipeout require separate constituency and voter-study analysis. Neither the audit nor a family-centred public image is assigned a proven causal share here.
