Communist Party of India
A smaller parliamentary presence and coalition dependence: the party’s own account identifies coordination weaknesses while defending a secular, socialist programme.
Identity & faction boundaries
CPI is separate from CPI(M) and CPI(ML) Liberation. Its 2025 party-hosted draft brief is not described as the full adopted Congress resolution. Some entries on the leadership website are historical; that whole page is not certified as the release-date committee roster. [opp-b-cpi-draft2025][opp-b-cpi-leadership]
Scope: 2004 through the 11 October 2026 source check. Selected electoral, institutional and leadership records; not a complete catalogue of every allegation. Current case outcomes are stated only where an inspected record supports them.
Affiliations, with their dates
These are dated records, not a claim that every arrangement remains unchanged at publication.
INDIA founding participant; Left and state coalitions operate separately. [opp-india-formation][opp-roster-report]
The party’s draft brief argues for opposition coordination and greater Left unity. [opp-b-cpi-draft2025]
Historical founding classification retained. Latest national and state coalition membership beyond the inspected documents is not independently certified. [opp-india-formation][opp-roster-report][opp-b-cpi-draft2025]
The election record
Five completed Lok Sabha cycles, followed by selected Assembly results. A predecessor is a separate party series. “Unknown” means this review could not establish the total; it does not mean zero.
| Election | Party identity / series | Seats won | Context & source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2004 · Lok SabhaIndia | CPI | 10 | Own-party election total; not the alliance tally or later parliamentary strength. [opp-eci-2004] |

Turning points
- Election
Ten parliamentary seats
CPI won ten Lok Sabha seats at the start of this comparison, separate from CPI(M)’s result. [opp-eci-2004]
- Election
Four seats in the next cycle
The own-party tally fell to four. The total does not identify one reason for each constituency loss. [opp-eci-2009]
- Election
One parliamentary seat
CPI was reduced to one Lok Sabha seat in 2014. Loss of representation is not itself a criminal or ideological finding. [opp-eci-2014]
- Election
One Telangana Assembly seat
The original legislature profile records one CPI seat in 2023 after none in 2018. A state-specific gain coexists with setbacks elsewhere. [opp-b-ts-assembly2023]
- Election
Two seats, as in 2019
The party won two seats again. Its role in larger fronts is not added to its own electoral total. [opp-eci-2019][opp-eci-2024]
- Alliance
D. Raja advocates Left unity
The party-hosted speech at CPI(M)’s Congress makes the case for cooperation and constitutional politics. It is the speaker’s position, not a voter-study finding. [opp-b-cpi-speech2025]
- Governance
Draft brief identifies opposition coordination failures
The party’s own brief criticises weak coordination, ideological clarity and seat-sharing in INDIA. This is a useful admission, explicitly at the draft-brief stage. [opp-b-cpi-draft2025]
- Election
Kerala seats fall from seventeen to eight
CPI won eight Kerala Assembly seats in 2026, compared with seventeen in the original 2021 result. This state setback is distinct from its unchanged two-seat national parliamentary tally in 2024. [opp-b-kerala-assembly2026][opp-b-kerala-assembly2021][opp-eci-2024]
No unlocated conviction is manufactured for a party profile
The inspected speeches, draft brief and leadership page do not supply a final party-wide corruption judgment. Analysis: candidates and ministers should still be scrutinised through declared cases, audit records and actual outcomes. The absence of a qualifying finding in this selected set is a research limit, not proof that every office-holder is free of wrongdoing. [opp-b-cpi-leadership][opp-b-cpi-draft2025]
Committee leadership and access for other members
The party website presents a national secretariat and executive structure. It includes historical entries and cannot certify every current office-holder. Analysis: the relevant nepotism questions concern actual nomination and promotion decisions, with records allowing comparison between relatives and other members. No hereditary leadership allegation is treated as proved without such evidence. [opp-b-cpi-leadership]
The stated target is a political programme
Party position: the 2025 draft brief sharply criticises the RSS-BJP and a proposed Hindu Rashtra, while advocating secular constitutional politics and caste equality. These are the party’s claims and political language. Analysis: criticism of Hindutva or caste hierarchy is not automatically an attack on Hindu believers. Any specific hostile statement or discriminatory policy requires its own authenticated text and response. [opp-b-cpi-draft2025]
A programme must be tested beyond its manifesto language
The draft brief calls for stronger grassroots activity and coordinated action; D. Raja’s speech argues for Left cooperation. Analysis: supporters can test that programme through constituency work, attendance, public-service delivery and transparent accounts. Neither document establishes a comprehensive record of implementation or supplies a current audit of all coalition ministries. [opp-b-cpi-draft2025][opp-b-cpi-speech2025]
Shrinking reach and dependence on effective cooperation
Analysis: ten seats in 2004 and two in 2024 show a major contraction. The party itself points to coordination and seat-sharing weaknesses, but its explanation is not an independent measurement of voter motives. Coalition cooperation may protect representation while obscuring whether an independent organisation is growing. Contest-level and voter evidence are needed to distinguish those possibilities.
