Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party
A dramatic loss after a large 2019 mandate: welfare claims, opaque borrowing, centralised leadership and the unresolved claims surrounding Tirupati.
Identity & faction boundaries
YSRCP’s seats are not retrospectively assigned to Congress before this party existed. Party sources also use “YSR Congress Party”; ECI’s formal identity is retained for electoral comparisons. A party biography still calling Jagan chief minister is historical, not current office-holder evidence. [opp-b-ysr-lifetime][opp-b-ysr-leaders]
Scope: 2004 through the 11 October 2026 source check. Selected electoral, institutional and leadership records; not a complete catalogue of every allegation. Current case outcomes are stated only where an inspected record supports them.
Affiliations, with their dates
These are dated records, not a claim that every arrangement remains unchanged at publication.
Separate regional party, not one of the 26 INDIA founding participants. [opp-eci-2024][opp-india-formation][opp-roster-report]
Historical non-founder status retained; issue-by-issue support is not treated as permanent NDA or INDIA membership. [opp-india-formation][opp-roster-report][opp-b-ysr-laddu]
The election record
Five completed Lok Sabha cycles, followed by selected Assembly results. A predecessor is a separate party series. “Unknown” means this review could not establish the total; it does not mean zero.
| Election | Party identity / series | Seats won | Context & source |

Turning points
- Election
Nine Lok Sabha seats in the first comparison cycle
YSRCP won nine seats in 2014. The separate party series starts here, rather than relabelling earlier Congress MPs. [opp-eci-2014]
- Election
Parliamentary gains to 22 seats
The party won 22 Lok Sabha seats. Such a mandate increased its responsibility to account publicly for policy and spending. [opp-eci-2019]
- Leadership
Plenary announces lifetime presidency
The party announced an unopposed election of Jagan and a lifetime-presidency amendment. That is what the plenary said; regulatory acceptance and current validity are not certified. [opp-b-ysr-lifetime]
- Oversight
Audit exposes undisclosed fiscal liabilities
CAG’s report for the year ended March 2022 describes off-budget borrowing and includes the state’s response. Debt is a liability, not itself evidence that the same amount was stolen. [opp-b-ap-finance]
- Election
A 151-seat mandate collapses to eleven
The original PRS profile compiling ECI data records YSRCP’s fall from 151 of 175 Assembly seats in 2019 to eleven in 2024; TDP won a majority. The parliamentary decline occurred in the same election cycle, but is a separate result. [opp-b-ap-assembly2024]
- Election
Lok Sabha seats fall to four
YSRCP’s own parliamentary tally fell from 22 to four. This history separates that result from allegations requiring legal proof. [opp-eci-2024][opp-eci-2019]
- Religion
Party contests the Tirupati allegations
YSRCP MPs rejected the animal-fat allegation and offered a procurement-policy explanation. Their account of a charge sheet is a party response; the document and present trial record were not independently inspected. [opp-b-ysr-laddu]
Off-budget borrowing and the accountability gap
Institutional finding: CAG recorded ₹1,18,393.81 crore in off-budget liabilities at March 2022 and criticised non-disclosure in budget documents. The state replied by relying on its statutory debt definition and fiscal constraints, including bifurcation and the pandemic. Analysis: the public question is whether legislators and citizens could see the real repayment burden, not whether all borrowing was personal theft. [opp-b-ap-finance]
Family legacy and an unopposed leadership model
The party’s own 2022 account celebrates an unopposed lifetime-presidency decision and its biographies centre Jagan and Vijayamma. Analysis: supporters can demand a published leadership-election procedure and a credible route to challenge incumbents. This record establishes concentration in the party’s presentation; it does not prove unlawful preference in every appointment or that ECI accepted the announced tenure. [opp-b-ysr-lifetime][opp-b-ysr-leaders]
Tirupati: faith, accusation and a missing evidentiary chain
Party response: in February 2026 YSRCP said investigators had found no animal fat and no named YSRCP leaders in the charge sheet. It said procurement norms had been changed to broaden competition without sacrificing quality. These are the party’s assertions. Laboratory provenance, the actual charge sheet and the latest court orders are not inspected here; neither guilt nor complete exoneration is declared. [opp-b-ysr-laddu]
Analysis: temple procurement deserves the same scrutiny as any other public contract, with added attention to devotees’ trust. A former chief minister’s personal faith does not demonstrate intentional injury to Hinduism. Claims of religious appeasement must identify the decision, beneficiary criteria, comparable treatment and evidence of motive.
Welfare and the bill left for the public
The fiscal report identifies liabilities hidden from the ordinary budget view and pressure on funds available for investment. It also records the government’s explanation for deficit financing. Analysis: a welfare benefit should be tested alongside its financing and service quality; neither praise of a scheme nor criticism of debt substitutes for an outcome evaluation. [opp-b-ap-finance]
A mandate can disappear without a single proven cause
Analysis: the 22-to-four parliamentary fall calls for scrutiny of coalition competition, local candidates and voter satisfaction with governance. This edition has no inspected voter study that apportions the result among those causes. The 2026 Tirupati response cannot be used as evidence of voters’ motives in June 2024.
